Mamata Banerjee announces removal of police chief, other officials

Mamata Banerjee on Monday announced that Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal will be removed from his post.

On September 16, 2024, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the removal of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, following widespread protests by doctors demanding his resignation. The protests were sparked by the rape and murder of a 31-year-old medical student at RG Kar Medical College in August. The junior doctors demanded accountability for the mishandling of the investigation, particularly alleging negligence and corruption in the police's response.
In addition to Goyal, other senior officials, including the Deputy Commissioner (North), Director of Medical Education, and Director of Health Services, were also removed from their posts. The government also assured the doctors that a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the case was underway. While some of the demands of the protesting doctors were met, they have vowed to continue their protest until all promises, particularly regarding the health department's reforms, are fulfilled

_However, the doctors said that their protests would continue until the promises made by the Chief Minister materialise. _
